The Location

Arezzo, City of Goldsmiths and home to Giorgio Vasari and Petrarch, is one of the true jewels of Tuscany, from the towering Duomo and the churches of San Domenico and San Francesco, to the Piazza Grande, depicted in Roberto Benigni’s now-classic film, “Life is Beautiful.”  It is a city of rich cultural and artistic traditions that continue today, and the historic centre, with its ancient cobbles and centuries-old palazzi, reflects this fact.  By fast train, the property is just over an hour from Rome and about half an hour from Florence, with all that these major centres have to offer.  The countryside surrounding Arezzo itself is stunning in its verdant beauty.  It is a city of tranquility, a splendid and safe haven in the rolling Tuscan hills. The apartment itself is located in a palazzo at one of the best addresses in Arezzo's historic centre, or "Centro Storico," in easy walking distance of parks, churches, schools, shopping and other amenities.

Arezzo's cathedral, located only five minutes' walk from the property, was built at the Parco Il Prato between 1278 and 1510, though the bell tower was finished in 1859.  The Duomo reminds us of Arezzo's artistic and spiritual heritage, and remains a testament to the faith of those who contributed their talents to its construction.

The Basilica of San Domenico is located a half-block's walk from your front door.  This is a 13th century church that has seen substantial recent restoration work, and fragments of 14th century frescos line its walls.  Above the altar is a famed crucifix by Cimabue, beautifully restored in 2003.  The basilica seems filled with an ancient, peaceful energy.

The Giostra del Saracino, a much-loved tradition in Arezzo, is a jousting competition that takes place in the Piazza Grande on the third Sunday of June and the first Sunday of September of every year.  For days before the competition, participants parade through the streets in costume, and the music and pageantry are certain to transport you back into Arezzo's colorful history.

Arezzo is home to the most important antique fair in Tuscany, and one of the most important in Italy, with as many as 500 exhibitors.  On the first weekend of every month, booths line the streets of the Centro Storico and fill the Piazza Grande, offering treasures for casual buyers and serious collectors alike.
